Er staat een flinke rij voor de kassa. Dat komt goed uit, zo kan ik nog even wat mailtjes versturen. Ik pak mijn mobiel en begin te typen. De mevrouw achter mij in de rij komt half naast mij staan. Ik merk dat haar blik op mijn schermpje gericht is. Hoewel mijn mailtje geen schokkende inhoud bevat, voel ik mij er toch ongemakkelijk bij. Ik kijk haar geïrriteerd aan en probeer wat te draaien, zodat ze niet meer mee kan lezen. Ze draait mee. Dan draai ik weer een andere kant op en op deze onhandige manier manoeuvreer ik mij richting kassa.

Wat is normaal?

Privacy, er is de laatste tijd veel over geschreven en gesproken. Want het gaat er niet om wát de mevrouw in de rij meeleest, maar dát ze het doet. Ik ervaar het als ontzettend onbeleefd, maar blijkbaar houdt zij er andere normen op na. Of ben ik het die afwijkt van de norm? Uit onderzoek blijkt dat 39% van de Nederlanders er totaal geen probleem mee heeft wanneer hun privé informatie op straat ligt. Daarmee staat Nederland op de zevende plaats in Europa wat betreft onverschilligheid ten opzichte van privacy.

Proef op de som

 Zijn wij Hollanders dan zo’n onverschillig volkje? Ik nam de proef op de som en ging, geheel tegen mijn principes in, ‘subtiel meelezen’ op andermans smartphones in trein, tram en metro. En wat merkte ik: mensen raakten geïrriteerd. Ze probeerden hun scherm weg te draaien en wierpen mij boze blikken toe. Net zoals ik in de rij voor de kassa probeer om de meelezende mevrouw af te schudden.

Eindelijk bereik ik de kassa en leg mijn boodschappen op de vingerafdrukband. Ik verstuur het mailtje naar de Gmail van een kennis en stop mijn smartphone weg. Mijn provider is, volgens de Europese Richtlijn Data Retentie, verplicht om de gegevens over het versturen van het mailtje minstens een half jaar te bewaren. Ondertussen scant Google het bericht zodra het binnenkomt bij de ontvanger. De caissière scant mijn boodschappen en vraagt naar mijn klantenkaart. Met één piepje registreert zij mijn aankopen in combinatie met het tijdstip en bedrag: allemaal gegevens die mijn klantprofiel vullen. Ik reken af door te pinnen, dus ook mijn bank weet waar ik op dat tijdstip ben en wat ik in deze winkel uitgeef. Ik stop mijn boodschappen in mijn tas en loop de winkel uit, onder het toeziend oog van de beveiligingscamera.

Struisvogel

Overheid, Google, de marketingafdeling van de supermarkt, mijn bank en de winkelbeveiliging, ze kijken en lezen allemaal mee. Ik merk dat ik daar weinig moeite mee heb. Sterker nog, ik werk er zelf aan mee. Ik kan contant betalen en daarnaast de klantenpas achterwege laten, maar in plaats daarvan kies ik voor pingemak en de aanbiedingen die bij de klantenkaart horen. Wat is dan het verschil met de mevrouw achter mij in de rij die op mijn schermpje mee wil lezen?
